Facts
- Astronomy (from Greek: ἀστρονομία) is a natural science that studies celestial objects and phenomena. It applies mathematics, physics, and chemistry, in an effort to explain the origin of those objects and phenomena and their evolution.
- Astronomy is a natural science. It is the study of everything outside the atmosphere of Earth. It studies celestial objects (such as stars, galaxies, planets, moons, asteroids, comets and nebulae) and processes (such as supernovae explosions, gamma ray bursts, and cosmic microwave background radiation).

- Astronomy is the study of the universe and its contents outside of Earth's atmosphere. Astronomers examine the positions, motions, and properties of celestial objects. Astrology attempts to study how those positions, motions, and properties affect people and events on Earth.
- The word astronomy comes from the Greek words astron which means star and nomos which means law. A person who studies astronomy is called anastronomer. Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences. Ancient people used the positions of the stars to navigate, and to find when was the best time to plant crops.
- Galileo Galilei is an example of an early observational astronomer who used a telescope and recorded his findings. Tools that modern observational astronomersuse to study space include radio waves, cameras, infrared technologies, ultraviolet wavelengths, x-rays and gamma rays.
